2017 was a warm and dry summer from the start of spring through to harvest. The great weather at spring resulted in an abundance of perfectly set and full bunches. An initial manual bunch thinning of the number of bunches per shoot, per vine was carried out to moderate the vines, bringing them back into balance. Added to this, a second ‘green harvest’ at verasion followed to ensure consistency of the remaining bunches. A small amount of leaf removal was carried out to get optimal sun exposure on the remaining fruit and air movement through the canopy.
The 2017 vintage gave us beautiful clean fruit with optimum physiological ripeness, classy crispness and great intensity of flavours.
Map Maker Pinot Gris is grown in individual parcels all on our Estate within the famous ‘Golden Triangle’ of the Rapaura Region of Marlborough. Each parcel comes from a unique site which is renowned for its terroir with old riverbed, clayish soils and riverbank gravels.

The different clones were hand picked separately to provide optimal flavour development. All were wholebunch pressed slowly with light pressure to extract only the highest quality juice. This juice was then cold settled for twelve hours and racked taking a small portion of solids to help increase creaminess. The wine was fermented in 60% stainless steel and 40% in a mixture of old oak puncheons (large double sized barrels). This provided extra texture to the wine but still retained great fruit intensity.

Map Maker Pinot Gris expresses great varietal pear and grapefruit character and typical bright Marlborough intensity. This is layered with a subtle hint of spice to provide an extra, more complex dimension to the wine. The refreshing acidity provides balance and a long length to compliment the ripe flavours and rich, smooth mouth feel.
