Viticulture

This single vineyard wine is produced from four different parcels in the heart of the 52-acre, family owned Staete Landt Vineyard. Set in the heart of the renowned Rapaura area of Marlborough, the soils are a mixture of rich loamy riverbed and stony riverbank. These soils are excellent for Chardonnay, producing intense flavours and robust structure.
Vintage 2010 began with the perfect budburst and fruit set conditions. Vintage 2010 began with a warm and dry spring, through most of the flowering period. As a result the bunches were large with generous crop levels. A lot of work on canopies was undertaken in January with intensive bunch thinning. The season stayed dry & warm through to harvest. During harvest the nights were slightly warmer and days were sunnier than normal. Grapes were thus harvested at perfect physiological ripeness with superb crisp, fresh acidity.
The four parcels of Staete Landt Chardonnay comprise of two different clones; clone 95 and clone 15, planted on three different rootstocks: Riparia Gloire, 101-14 and Schwarzmann. Each clone and rootstock combination is mirroored on different soil types, within the Estate Vineyard, and treated individually throughout the season.

Winemaking

After handpicking the grapes we carefully whole bunch pressed. The juice was slowly fermented in a mixture of 10% new and 90% old French puncheons. We used indigenous yeast for fermentation in half the wine, which added complexity and mouthfeel to the wine. Following alcoholic fermentation the puncheon were stirred regulary until the completion of malolactic fermentation. The wine was adged on lees untill December 2010 and racked into old oak barrels with a total maturation period of 18 months.
This has resulted in an elegant and well structured Chardonnay with attractive citrus, tropical fruit and mineral notes. The wine was bottled in September 2011.

Tasting Note

Staete Landt Chardonnay is one of the best kept secrets of the Estate: full and round yet stylish, great texture and length, this wine shows the perfect balance between fruit, acidity and oak integration. A whiff of sea breeze, citrus fruit and cream on the nose, white peaches and hazelnuts on the palate and with a mineral aftertaste that lingers on. A truly great wine with a strong personalilty and European elegance, showing the unique cool climate Marlborough vibrance.
